2021 Toyota Camry TRD Puts Power Behind Popular Family Ride – The Morning Sun

0

A mention of the Toyota Camry usually doesn’t come with excitement. Sure, a ton of them are sold every year, and people consider it a safe and reliable vehicle for family travel and for getting from point A to point B, but that’s not a ride that people are generally happy to get behind the wheel.

To change that perception, allow me to introduce the Toyota Camry TRD, a model that elevates the traditional family vehicle to appeal to driving enthusiasts. I recently spent some time driving a 2021 Camry TRD, and I’m back with a full report.

LOOKING

On the outside, the Camry TRD’s spoiler and styling stands out from the standard Camry and its rivals. You will certainly stand out with the sporty look of the Camry TRD.

It features 19-inch TRD matte black alloy rims, dual exhaust with polished stainless steel end caps, red painted brake calipers and a glossy black rear spoiler.

The interior is also sharp, with a red and black stitched design throughout, and even red seat belts to complete the look. It’s quite spacious in the backseat and you get comfortable seats for all the passengers. The power driver’s seat also includes lumbar support and push-button start.

HOW IS THE ROAD?

This is where the Camry’s TRD model shows its true character.

It comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and includes paddle shifters for those who want to control gears. Total horsepower is 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft. of couple.

For comparison, the regular Camry has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and delivers 202 horsepower / 186 lb-ft.

The TRD model also features TRD-optimized front and rear suspension, with thicker underbody reinforcements and 12.9-inch front rotors with dual-piston calipers. The Camry TRD is only available with front wheel drive.

I had a lot of fun driving the Camry TRD, something you don’t often hear about a Camry model. The 0-60 time of about 6 seconds was pretty impressive, as it had a lot of power. As soon as you step on the accelerator, you can feel the dynamic nature of this TRD model.

The engine noise is a bit loud, but it adds to the sporty feel of the ride. There are three driving modes to choose from depending on your situation: Eco, Normal and Sport.

The Camry TRD performed very well and offered responsive and immediate braking.

What’s great about the Camry TRD is that depending on how you ride it, it’s both great for family and road trips, but also a pleasure to tackle on roads where you can. test its limits. These dual capabilities are rare to find in a vehicle, making it a solid alternative to the standard Camry.

TECHNOLOGY, SECURITY

Technology was a highlight on the 2021 Camry TRD. The infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen and the audio system includes 6 speakers. It is very easy to connect your phone to the vehicle for bluetooth connection and music and phone streaming.

The look and design of the tech system is a bit dated compared to its competition, but it performs incredibly well, both by voice command and by touch controls. And in the end, that’s what really matters.

You also get multiple USB ports, free 3 months of satellite radio, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility for phone mirroring, and a 4.2-inch multi-information display.

When it comes to safety, Toyota is near the top of the vehicle rankings. For starters, you get a perfect 5-star government security rating, which is rarely seen.

It also has a fair amount of safety features for a sports car.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ features include: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control at Full Speed, Lane Departure Warning with Steering Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Automatic High Beam and Park Assist road signs.

The Star Safety System is also included, with a series of traction, cornering and braking technologies that help drivers accelerate, steer and stop, especially in slippery conditions or during emergency maneuvers. . The Star Safety System includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Antilock Brakes, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology.

Other safety features included are the blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert and a rear view camera to aid in parking situations.

MPG

The official fuel consumption figures on the Camry TRD are 22 city / 31 highway / 25 combined.

In comparison, a regular Camry gets 28 mpg city / 39 mpg highway; and a Camry Hybrid gets up to 51 mpg in the city / 53 mpg on the highway.

From my experience driving the Camry TRD, the numbers were lower, as I only averaged 19 mpg. But I used sport mode almost exclusively, which would bring the numbers down.

As you gain in performance you lose in mpg on the TRD model. And that’s fine with me. It’s still my favorite version of the Camry despite its poor fuel efficiency.

THE PRICE

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD I tested had a slightly higher price tag. My test vehicle was just over $ 34,000. The base price of a regular Camry starts at around $ 25,000 and the Camry TRD starts at around $ 33,000.

LOWER LINE

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD is aimed directly at the driving enthusiast who wants the reliability and safety of the Camry for family time, but that little TRD boost for when they can really let loose on the roads. If this sounds like you, I recommend a test drive.
