Many people have been affected by the pandemic and have unfortunately lost their jobs. The silver lining to this was that many people were getting their unemployment check plus an additional check that was part of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation.
There were others who were able to apply for a special unemployment program. According to NJ.com, those who applied for the special unemployment program were “freelancers, independent contractors, and self-employed people.”
Now check this. Many people across the country, including “at least 130,000 New Jersey workers,” received a letter in the mail asking those who received extra money to pay it back. I would be furious because I would have already spent it.
NJ.com shared that it could be a lucky year for those who received extra money because they will NOT have to pay it back.
We learned that more than 200,000 unemployed Americans received this additional check which was “an average of $4,400 per person”.
Imagine if the IRS or the US Department of Labor asks you to get that money back immediately and you don’t have it to pay it back? It would be extremely stressful.
It was also stated on NJ.com that the Department of Labor is trying to determine who is eligible to keep this money and not have to pay it back.
NJ.com reported that Asaro-Angelo of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies said in a letter that it was not fair to try to recover money from those who received a bit more and that it’s “counter-intuitive to our mission to help people in times of need.” In fact, trying to get that money back for these Americans can stress them and their families.
